Director Wong Jing will be making his return to TVB with a new big-budget drama in order to help the station battle the increasing competition from local stations.
According to Jayne Stars website, the unnamed drama will be a collaboration with mainland China and will also feature a carefully selected star-studded cast - including HKFA Best Actress Deanie Ip and actor Kenneth Ma. Hawick Lau and Tong Fei, who are highly popular among the mainland audience, were also cast in important roles in the new drama.
Rumour has it that Wong Jing had initially wanted to ask Bosco Wong to play the lead role in the 35-40 episode drama. However, with the actor busy filming "Young Sherlock", the director has chosen Kenneth Ma to replace him.
Asked why he chose Kenneth, an inside source stated, "Kenneth is well behaved, and he is not picky with scripts. He also has a very good image and TVB is determined to promote him. Wong Jing is very satisfied with this cast, and he believes it can help pull ratings."
When asked about his views on competition from Ricky Wong's HKTV, Wong Jing stated, "What has he [Ricky] done in the television industry? As far as I know, Ricky is just a foolish man who does not know how to invest properly. I don't believe that TVB is threatened by HKTV."
He continued, "TVB dramas were strongly successful in the past because they aired worldwide. Dramas are truly good when other places say they're good. Nowadays, few people from mainland watch TVB dramas. There's not a lot to earn from filming in Hong Kong. This is why we're heading to a larger direction."
