The 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards ceremony was held at the TVB Studios in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong, on Monday. Although a total of 1, 545,922 votes were cast by the public for the various awards this year, TVB only announced the number of votes received by selected winners, which caused many to question the transparency of voting results this year.
Regarding this, TVB Deputy Director of External Affairs Tsang Sing Mingmaintained that it was a fair contest and clarified, “We will not disclose the voting results.”
TVB actress Tavia Yeung brought home the Best Actress trophy for her role in 'Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles' with 110,795 votes;actor Wayne Lai bagged the Best Actor award for his role in 'The Confidant' with 114,947 votes, and TVB drama 'When Heaven Burns' won the Best Feature Series with 84,472 votes.
Many netizens have also expressed doubt over the figures and the broadcast station has received close to63 notifications regarding the public’s displeasure overthe Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Feature Series award winners at press time. At the same time, theOffice of Communications Authority in Hong Kong received a total of 110 complaints on the lack of transparency.
Raymond Lam, who was previously tipped hot favourite to win the prestigious award, commented on his missed opportunity, “I’m a little [disappointed], but it’s not within my control.”
“I’d like to take this chance to thank my fans and everyone who voted for me,” he continued.
Newly crowned Best Actor, Wayne Lai expressed his thoughts on the controversy, saying, “TVB hired another company to tally the votes and the counting is done very carefully . No game is completely fair and there is definitely room for improvement.”
He added that he is not bothered by the complaints as it is impossible for everyone to like him. When asked if he thinks the complaints are made by Raymond’s fans, he laughed, “No. It’s a healthy competition.”
