Contrary to fans' anticipation, it was recently reported that martial arts star, Donnie Yen may not be reprising his role as the iconic character Ip Man.
As reported on Jayne Stars, earlier, it was announced that Donnie will be playing Ip Man again in April last year, and that Pegasus Motion Pictures had spent RMB 150 million to bring back director Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen together for the new 3D movie that will begin shooting in July.
However, it was rumoured that the project was facing funding problems, which stemmed from the hesitance of mainland Chinese companies to invest in projects that might not bring a satisfactory return at the box office, after the recent box office flops of big-budget movies such as "Saving General Yang".
The news divided the opinions between Raymond and Wilson. While the producer wanted to continue, Wilson suggested it would be better to not film, rather than risk the series' reputation due to lack of funds. Consequently, Raymond decided to replace Wilson with his son, Edmond, and to shoot "Ip Man 3" in regular 2D.
In order to show support for the original director, Donnie decided to back out of "Ip Man 3", insisting that he would not act if Wilson is not directing.
Meanwhile, according to insiders, Donnie and Wilson's filming schedules are packed for the rest of the year, making it unlikely that they will have time to start shooting "Ip Man 3" in July. While Wilson is set to begin filming "Zhong Kui", Donnie will begin Teddy Chan's "One Person's Martial Arts Circle" after the conclusion of "The Iceman Cometh 3D".
