The 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards has yet to reveal its winners, but various speculations arose regarding the actors that would win the coveted awards. Director Andrew Lau is one of the few speculators, picking Nick Cheung as his favourite to win Best Actor.
HK Top Ten website reported that with the awards looming around the corner, the Best Actor and Actress nominees were rounded up for a special photo shoot, each wearing the sponsored Piaget diamond jewellery.
While speaking to the media at the event, the "Infernal Affairs" director expressed, "Nick Cheung made a lot of sacrifices for his character in "Nightfall". He did not have any line or any expression, so it was very difficult."
He continued, "Not many Hong Kong actors would do that, as they would rather take the money and run. They wouldn't have made any preparation for their characters beforehand."
Nick Cheung will be competing against powerful contenders such as Chapman To, who earlier won Best Actor at the 19th Hong Kong Film Critic Society Awards, Sean Lau, who won Best Actor at the 49th Golden Horse Awards, Tony Leung (Chi Wai), who has always been a favourite among audiences and critics, and Tony Leung (Ka Fai), who was seen as the favourite to win this time around.
Meanwhile, the highly prolific filmmaker also praised Miriam Yeung for her performance in the movie, "Love in the Buff", stating, "Although she is already a mother, her helplessness in the movie was very well played and left a deep impression with viewers. She has become much more charming."
Miriam will be competing against Zhou Xun, nominated for two movies, "The Great Magician" and "The Silent War", first-time nominee Elanne Kong, and Sammi Cheng, who is also a favourite to win the Best Actress award through her performance in "Romancing in Thin Air".
The 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards will take place on 13 April at the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Centre.
