Ivana Wong - Why Not 'Leave Blank'
Ivana Wong has unique vocals and had always sang from her heart. When she first debuted, her girl-next-door voice in I'm Really Hurt (我真的受傷了) quickly turned into another 'rock and roll' voice in the song Made of Water. She looks soft and tender, but she's actually as cold as ice. Ivana's music style varied over the years, but its still not enough for her, she's still pursuing a breakthrough. "2012 was one crazy year, even the world's end date (Dooms Day) could be calculated, what can't be possible? We must do something that is more daring and innovative!" Thus, she temporarily put the music composer identity down and stopped composing and writing music. Instead, she switched from producing traditional music albums to singles. She collaborated with several different music people of different styles including Chochukmo, Khalil Fong and Seung Sek Leui in attempt to create new sparks. Singing I Came From Mars (我來自火星) loudly, Ivana descended onto Earth, jumped out of the recording studio and into the life of "Ng Chi Ching" from TVB series Inbound Troubles. She experienced the culture of shooting TV series and learned the essences of it. She was even able to display her song writing and stage performing skills.
Ivana feels her song Leave Blank (留白) left the strongest message from the lyrics. "Leave Blank is a painting skill. There must be some blank in order to express the beauty of colors. If life is a painting, then we cannot cram in colors on such a dense surface. Jump out of that painting and make a blank space for yourself." Each day, during the times of anxiety, worry or being busy, some people need the pressure to be able to display their inner qualities and creative thoughts. In one part of the Leave Blank lyrics, "Painting day and night until there is a scar, throw the painting brush away", that is exactly what enlightened Ivana's negative attitude on stress.
Bring Hope Through Music
Born into a family background of music and having nothing to worry about, Ivana's parents trained her to develop in music and arts field. She frankly expressed she is one of the luckier ones: "During my childhood, I read a lot of stories on many artists and came into contact with different types of music. That is how I was able to see both the beautiful and ugly side of human nature. After entering the industry, I had the opportunity to visit an elder living alone. I've been to India, Africa, Vietnam and other areas to visit. I've seen the locals living without any dignity. What they are most concern about is being able to bring food to the table and their families." Returning to her familiar music world, Ivana said: "Through a verse in the lyrics and a snippet of the music, penetrates a type of see through into the human wisdom and to bring hope to those living a difficult life through music. Let them feel there is someone in this world that understands and help them get through the tough times!"
Acting's Positive Energy
All along, Ivana only focused on music, people never thought she could even get close to the television culture. In the past, she only had two acting experiences, from the musicals Octave and I Love You Because. Recently, she jumped right out of the record studio and participated in her good friend Wong Cho Lam's first produced series. Aside from being touched by her good friend, Ivana participated in this series because of her one wish: "It's purely because I wanted to bring positive energy to the audience through performing arts, whether if its a musical, a film or a TV series!" Ivana feels Inbound Troubles is another type of Leave Blank, "It's not just among the HK-China contradiction, but also among society, family and human relations. The lifestyles and culture of you and I are different. It is normal for there to exist contradictions because there are a lot of discrepancies in every little part of life. Just because this is a comedy series, it helps change the negative thoughts and stress into positive energy." In the serial's world, a person can stand out and ponder over the world situation on different levels. Of course, whether you accept it or not, it all depends on your opinion. Also have to look at the quality of the script and the person's ability to recollect."
Filming Series Out to In
After all, this is Ivana's first debut TV series. She walked into the filming studio trembling in fear, "It is completely different from stage play. There is no time for you to do countless dress rehearsals and you have to handle several different things instantly. Aside from your lines and facial expressions, you also have to worry about your standing position, the lighting and camera coordination." After two months of concentration on filming the series, it was finally over. Ivana cannot control how the public reacts when the series broadcast. The singer believed acting and singing are interrelated. To conclude, it is still an experience. The acting skills she gained from this series and the musicals can be used in her singing performances. Ivana analyzed in a serious tone: "Usually acting is In to Out. That is, if you are feeling mentally troubled, then you can convey a troubled expression. However, when filming series, an artist does not have the time to build their emotions before the cameras roll. Often times, it is the expressions that brings out the individual's emotions, meaning it's Out to In. You must be clear on every action, eye expression and body language, so the not-so-concentrated viewer can still understand what's going on. It is true that singing requires In to Out performance, but acting gave me training on body language and how to convey my expressions. It helps with the Out to In emotions and enrich the sing performance."
