Stephen Chow's latest directorial effort "Journey To The West" was a hit in Mainland China despite a lukewarm response from audiences in Hong Kong, with a record of RMB78 million in opening day sales in China.
It was reported that the participation of rising Chinese actors such as Wen Zhang and Huang Bo, in addition to stellar casts such as Shu Qi, Chrissie Chau and fan favourite, Show Luo, may have been one of the reasons for the movie's success - beating "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" opening day sales of RMB70 million last summer.
However, comedies didn't fare well in Hong Kong in the Lunar season this year, with Bruce Willis' "A Good Day to Die Hard" opening sales beating local comedies such as "Hotel Deluxe" (HKD3.85 million), "I Love Hong Kong 2013" (HKD4.07 million) and "Journey to the West" (HKD 7.27 million) at the box office.
It is believed that the Stephen Chow-directed movie was not as popular in Hong Kong as it was in mainland China, unlike his earlier films, due to the fact that the actor himself is missing from the movie.
